After serving as rector of the prestigious Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón, he returned to his childhood street with an ambitious vision: transform its facades into a large-scale urban art project.

The first 30 facades were inaugurated on April 19, 2001 — in the middle of Argentina’s worst economic and political crisis — with a neighborhood celebration that included homemade pasta cooked on long tables in the street. In 2004, Santa María began replacing the original painted designs with Venetian mosaic tiles, a material that would last decades without fading. Today, 40 facades have been transformed, each one taking at least a month to complete. The work has always been free — Santa María manages materials, organizes volunteers, and puts his own hands to the tiles, every day.

In 2014, the passage was declared Cultural Heritage of Barracas by the Buenos Aires Legislature.
