Pasaje Lanín Buenos Aires: How to Visit + Safety Tips
A quiet street covered in Venetian mosaics — and the most overlooked gem in the city.
Plan your visit →Morning slots are the most requested for photography and quieter streets.
If you are looking for the most authentic and “Instagrammable” spot in Buenos Aires, you’ve likely heard of Pasaje Lanín. Located in Barracas, just minutes from San Telmo and La Boca, this hidden gem is a masterpiece of urban art that most travelers miss — not because it’s not worth it, but because it’s not easy to reach.
Imagine arriving at a quiet street, far from the crowds, where every house is covered in vibrant, colorful mosaics and there’s no rush — just time to explore and capture the perfect photo.
Where is Pasaje Lanín Located?
Pasaje Lanín is located in the southern neighborhood of Barracas, approximately 15 minutes from San Telmo and La Boca. The street runs for three blocks between Calle Brandsen and Avenida Suárez.
Its location is slightly isolated from main tourist hubs like Palermo or Recoleta, which is why for most international visitors, a private transfer is simply the most practical and reliable option.
The Artist Behind the Mosaics: Marino Santa María
Pasaje Lanín is not just a colorful street — it’s the life’s work of one man. Marino Santa María was born in 1949 in the very house where his studio stands today, at number 33 of the passage. After serving as rector of the prestigious Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón, he returned to his childhood street with an ambitious vision: transform its facades into a large-scale urban art project.
The first 30 facades were inaugurated on April 19, 2001 — in the middle of Argentina’s worst economic and political crisis — with a neighborhood celebration that included homemade pasta cooked on long tables in the street. In 2004, Santa María began replacing the original painted designs with Venetian mosaic tiles, a material that would last decades without fading. Today, 40 facades have been transformed, each one taking at least a month to complete. The work has always been free — Santa María manages materials, organizes volunteers, and puts his own hands to the tiles, every day.
In 2014, the passage was declared Cultural Heritage of Barracas by the Buenos Aires Legislature.

Is Pasaje Lanín Safe for Tourists?
Barracas is a genuine residential neighborhood, not a typical tourist district. Visitors unfamiliar with Buenos Aires often find it more practical to arrive by private transfer — particularly those traveling with camera equipment or on a tight schedule — since the area is not well connected to the main tourist routes.
To guarantee a stress-free experience, we recommend a pre-booked service. Having a professional private driver means you can focus entirely on the mosaics, not on logistics.
Is Pasaje Lanín Worth Visiting?
Yes — especially if you’re looking for a unique, non-touristy experience. It offers a level of artistic detail and neighborhood soul that you won’t find in the more commercialized parts of the city. Most visitors spend 20–30 minutes exploring the three blocks, making it the perfect “secret stop” during a broader private sightseeing tour.
