Argentine wine means Mendoza, and Mendoza means a two-hour flight or a fourteen-hour drive, plus at least two nights away. For a traveller with four days in Buenos Aires, that is the whole trip.
What almost nobody mentions is that Buenos Aires Province has its own wine map. It is small, it is young by Argentine standards, and it does something Mendoza physically cannot: it grows grapes at sea level, cooled by the Atlantic, and on the stone soils of the Tandilia hills, which are among the oldest rock formations on the continent. The wines are different because the conditions are different. Crisp Albariño instead of high-altitude Malbec.
All four estates below receive visitors, and all four are close enough to leave after breakfast and be back for dinner.

The Atlantic in the glass
This is the one that changes how people think about Argentine wine. Trapiche planted at Chapadmalal, on the coast near Mar del Plata, six kilometres from the sea, and the ocean does the rest: cool nights, salt in the air, a growing season slow enough to keep acidity intact. The result is Albariño, Riesling, Chardonnay and a taut Pinot Noir that taste like they came from a different country than the Malbec you had last night.
Vineyard tours and tastings run Wednesday to Sunday, by prior reservation only.

A family estate in a village that time forgot
Uribelarrea is a pueblo of dirt-edged streets and low houses that has doubled as a film set for period productions more than once. Finca Don Atilio sits beside it, a vineyard of about a dozen years working Tannat and Syrah at a scale where the person pouring is usually the person who pruned.
The visit starts at 11 and runs roughly four hours: a walk through the vines, the tasting, and then empanadas and something sweet with coffee. It is the most relaxed of the four and the easiest to do with people who do not particularly care about wine.

The closest one to the city
Gamboa is an agritourism project rather than a pure winery visit: vines, a table, a long lunch, and an afternoon that ends without anybody checking a watch. At 65 kilometres from Buenos Aires it is the shortest drive of the four, straight up the Panamericana, which makes it the sensible pick if you only have one day and want to spend it eating rather than travelling.

Wine and driving do not mix, and rural Buenos Aires has no Uber. A private driver for the day is not a luxury here, it is the only way the tasting works.

TANDIL · THE STONE HILLS
Small production on very old rock
Tandil is granite country, part of the Tandilia system, and Cordón Blanco works five hectares there for an annual production of around twelve thousand litres. That is tiny, which is the point: this is not an industrial visit, and the wines carry the mineral edge that the soil suggests.
Tandil is the furthest of the four and works better as an overnight, paired with the town's cheese and salami tradition, which is the other thing the region does properly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the wine actually good, or is this just convenience?
Both things can be true. The coastal whites from Chapadmalal are genuinely distinctive and win their own recognition, not a regional handicap. The reds from the province are younger and more variable than Mendoza's. Go for the difference, not to replace a Mendoza trip.
How long does a winery day take from Buenos Aires?
Campana is about an hour each way, Uribelarrea about ninety minutes, Chapadmalal closer to four hours, and Tandil around four and a half. The first two are comfortable single days. Chapadmalal and Tandil are better with a night at the other end.
Do I need to book?
Yes, everywhere. Trapiche Costa & Pampa states it explicitly and the smaller estates simply may not have anyone there to receive you otherwise. None of these are drop-in cellar doors.
Closer Than the Flight You Were About to Book
There is a version of this trip where you spend two days getting to Mendoza and back. There is another where you leave Buenos Aires at nine, stand in a vineyard by eleven, and are back in Palermo for dinner.
