ART · MUSEUMS · 2026
One of them is free every day of the year, two of them close on Tuesdays, one opens only Thursday to Sunday, and one holds the only Van Gogh on public view in the country.

Buenos Aires collects art the way it collects everything else: unevenly, ambitiously, and with a national museum that costs nothing to enter. The five below are spread across five neighbourhoods, from Recoleta to La Boca, and between them they cover European old masters, Latin American modernism and whatever is happening this month. At Buenos Aires Transfers we spend a lot of afternoons parked outside them, which is where the note about opening days comes from.
Read the opening days before you plan. Only Bellas Artes keeps a schedule you would guess: two of the others close on Tuesdays, one opens only four days a week, and a closed door is a worse outcome than a museum you skipped on purpose.
01 · MUSEO NACIONAL DE BELLAS ARTES
RECOLETA · FREE EVERY DAY · THREE FLOORS
The only Van Gogh on public view in the country
The national collection, in a former waterworks pumping station that Alejandro Bustillo rebuilt between 1929 and 1932. Three floors of galleries, and admission is free every day of the year, which makes it the single best value in the city.
The European holdings are real: Goya, Rubens, a portrait from Rembrandt's workshop, Monet, Manet, Renoir, Degas, Rodin, Chagall. The one to find is Van Gogh's "Le Moulin de la Galette", painted in 1886 or 1887 and the only Van Gogh on public view in Argentina, which sits at the centre of the impressionist room. The Argentine collection is split by floor: Prilidiano Pueyrredón and Cándido López downstairs with the nineteenth century, Berni and Xul Solar upstairs with the twentieth, and it is the better half of the museum if you want to understand the country.
→ AV. DEL LIBERTADOR 1473, RECOLETA
Tuesday to Friday 11:00 to 19:30, weekends 10:00 to 19:30. Closed Monday.
02 · MALBA
PALERMO · LATIN AMERICAN MODERNISM · 2001
The best single room of modernism on the continent
Opened in 2001 around the collection Eduardo Costantini assembled, and still the best single room of Latin American modernism anywhere. Tarsila do Amaral's Abaporu is here, the painting that launched Brazilian modernism and that Costantini bought for a sum that made headlines, and so is Frida Kahlo's 1942 self-portrait with a monkey and a parrot. From 20 September 2026 until mid-March 2027 the museum shows Viva Frida, her Tehuana dresses, jewellery and corsets from the Casa Azul, hung alongside Diego and I, the last self-portrait she painted. There is a cinema and a good shop.
→ AV. FIGUEROA ALCORTA 3415, PALERMO
Monday and Thursday to Sunday 12:00 to 20:00, Wednesday from 11:00. Closed Tuesday. There is an entry fee.
03 · MUSEO MODERNO
SAN TELMO · EX TOBACCO FACTORY · CLOSED TUESDAYS
Argentine art since the 1950s
Argentine modern and contemporary art from the 1950s avant-garde onward, in the red brick building of the former Nobleza Piccardo tobacco factory, which the museum moved into in 1986. Big, light, and less crowded than the two above.
Watch the schedule: it opens Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 11:00 to 19:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays 11:00 to 20:00. It closes on Tuesdays, like MALBA, so a Tuesday museum day means Bellas Artes and nothing else on this list. On the other hand it is one of the two you can visit on a Monday, and entry is free on Wednesdays and on the last Sunday of the month.
→ AV. SAN JUAN 350, SAN TELMO

04 · FUNDACIÓN PROA
LA BOCA · TEMPORARY SHOWS · ROOFTOP CAFÉ
Check what is on before you cross the city
On the waterfront in La Boca, an old Italianate house that a Milan studio rebuilt in 1996 and again in 2008, when two glass wings went up either side of the original facade. It shows major international temporary exhibitions rather than a permanent collection. The rooftop café looks out over the Riachuelo, the Vuelta de Rocha and the old transporter bridge, and is a good place to be at the end of an afternoon in La Boca.
→ AV. PEDRO DE MENDOZA 1929, LA BOCA
Wednesday to Sunday, 12:00 to 19:00. Since the programme is entirely temporary, check what is on before you cross the city for it.
05 · COLECCIÓN AMALITA (FORTABAT)
PUERTO MADERO · VIÑOLY BUILDING
The building is part of the visit
Rafael Viñoly designed this one, and the building is part of the visit: a glass and steel box on the Puerto Madero docks with a curved roof of motorised louvres that track the sun. Inside is the private collection of Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat, "Amalita", the name the museum now goes by, and it mixes Turner, Warhol, Chagall and Dalí with a strong Argentine holding: Pettoruti, Bernaldo de Quirós, Marta Minujín.
→ OLGA COSSETTINI 141, PUERTO MADERO
Thursday to Sunday only, 12:00 to 20:00, last entry half an hour before closing. Tickets are sold online.
The five, at a glance
| Museum | Neighbourhood | Strongest at | Open |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bellas Artes | Recoleta | European masters and Argentine painting | Tue to Sun, free every day |
| MALBA | Palermo | Latin American modernism | Mon, Wed to Sun, 12:00 to 20:00 (Wed from 11:00). Closed Tuesday |
| Museo Moderno | San Telmo | Argentine modern and contemporary | Mon, Wed to Sun. Closed Tuesday |
| Fundación Proa | La Boca | International temporary shows | Wed to Sun, 12:00 to 19:00 |
| Colección Amalita | Puerto Madero | Private collection and the building | Thu to Sun only, 12:00 to 20:00 |

Two that go well together
Bellas Artes and MALBA are fifteen minutes apart along Figueroa Alcorta and make an obvious pair for one day, with lunch in between. Proa and the Colección Amalita are the other axis, at opposite ends of the old port: the Amalita is a walk from Retiro, Proa is not a walk from anywhere.
The distances are the argument for a driver: La Boca to Puerto Madero is ten minutes by car and an awkward proposition otherwise, and the museums that close earliest are the ones furthest out.
