One of them is free every day of the year, one closes on Tuesdays and opens on Mondays, and one holds the only Van Gogh in the country.
Buenos Aires collects art the way it collects everything else: unevenly, ambitiously, and with a national museum that costs nothing to enter. The five below are spread across five neighbourhoods, from Recoleta to La Boca, and between them they cover European old masters, Latin American modernism and whatever is happening this month.
Read the opening days before you plan. Two of these museums keep schedules that catch people out, and a closed door is a worse outcome than a museum you skipped on purpose.

The only Van Gogh in the country
The national collection, in a former waterworks pumping station that Alejandro Bustillo redesigned in the 1930s. Thirty-four rooms, and admission is free every day of the year, which makes it the single best value in the city.
The European holdings are real: Goya, Rembrandt, Rubens, Monet, Manet, Renoir, Degas, Rodin, Chagall. The one to find is Van Gogh's "Le Moulin de la Galette", painted around 1886 and the only Van Gogh in Argentina, which sits at the centre of the impressionist room. Upstairs, the Argentine collection runs from Prilidiano Pueyrredón and Cándido López through Berni and Xul Solar, and it is the better half of the museum if you want to understand the country.

The best single room of modernism on the continent
Opened in 2001 around the collection Eduardo Costantini assembled, and still the best single room of Latin American modernism anywhere. Tarsila do Amaral's Abaporu is here, the painting that launched Brazilian modernism and that Costantini bought for a sum that made headlines. So are works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and a rotating programme that is consistently the most interesting temporary schedule in the city. There is a cinema and a good shop.

Argentine art since the 1950s
Argentine modern and contemporary art from the 1950s avant-garde onward, in the red brick building of the former Nobleza Piccardo tobacco factory, which the museum moved into in 1986. Big, light, and less crowded than the two above.
Watch the schedule: it opens Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 11:00 to 19:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays 11:00 to 20:00. It closes on Tuesdays, which is the opposite of every other museum on this list, and worth remembering in both directions: it is also the one museum you can visit on a Monday.

Check what is on before you cross the city
On the waterfront in La Boca, a nineteenth century Italianate house wrapped in glass, showing major international temporary exhibitions rather than a permanent collection. Founded in 1996. The rooftop café looks out over the old transporter bridge and the working river, and is a good place to be at the end of an afternoon in La Boca.

The building is part of the visit
Rafael Viñoly designed this one, and the building is part of the visit: a glass and steel box on the Puerto Madero docks with a curved roof of motorised louvres that track the sun. Inside is the private collection of Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat, which mixes Turner, Warhol, Chagall and Dalí with a strong Argentine holding: Pettoruti, Bernaldo de Quirós, Marta Minujín.

Two that go well together
Bellas Artes and MALBA are fifteen minutes apart along Figueroa Alcorta and make an obvious pair for one day, with lunch in between. Proa and the Fortabat are the other axis, at opposite ends of the old port, and neither is walkable from the centre.
The distances are the argument for a driver: La Boca to Puerto Madero is ten minutes by car and an awkward proposition otherwise, and the museums that close earliest are the ones furthest out.
